This episode podcast lays out a nice representation of the current state of things.
Join three philosophy professors: Christoph Schuringa, Genia Schönbaumsfeld, and Babette Babich.
It’s a cool discussion because through the three of them. It really gives us a good idea of the tension in what we call modern philosophy. For the past hundred years there has been a Continental side, and an analytical side. The Continental side was mostly represented by European philosopher’s. And the analytical side was more England and America.
Not only do they give us a nice brief definition of the difference, but for this podcast, the hosts picked three wonderful philosophers, which I feel represent the analytical side, the continental side, and then someone sort of in the middle.
Genia Schonbaumsfeld – Analytic
Chris Schiringa – middle
Babette Babich – Continental
Also interesting is that not only do each of their positions in argument about the topics give us a feeling of the current environment in academic philosophy, but each of the people sort of represent as characters what the two sides tend to gather around so far as attitudes and what I would say is a certain temperament.
Chris, interestingly, enough seems to bring in the most recent school, speculative realism, which indeed does fall under the Continental rubric as just a tendency or as a kind of prior category, and I’d say that speculative realism really brought forth the contemporary question of realism in general that we exist in now I would say.
I find this podcast very useful as well because it is basically from these three positions that I contextualize mental health as a solution, or as an encompassing rhetoric which explains what’s going on even in this podcast discussion but the Philosopher’s as well.
I hope you enjoy it !
One response to “A Nice Podcast about the current state of philosophy: Analytic, Continental, or both?!”
Virtue: “A life-giving attunement to what is true.” A good definition.
Oh, I guess I am listening to the wrong podcast: “Should we be transgressive?”
