When we are suffering, often thinking about what is actually happening is not appealing. We just want help; we just want it gone !

So it is mental health is often missed by the time we begin to be concerned with it. It really is as though the very missing of what mental health is is the mental health issue.

This kind of problem, though, is insidious because it is the experience of a problem, that is, the experience of which is not knowing just what the problem is.

And often, it feels so good to hear that someone else might know what the problem is. So, if we can put a name to it, and then make a definition, then it seems like we are getting somewhere toward fixing the problem.

What often happens?

we feel better with the treatment,

or

we don’t, and we keep asking more and more people, and getting more and more treatment, which basically tells the person that they are indeed wrong in their experience —

that their experience is wrong !

In other words: a Problem.

Mental Health Philosophy comes to terms with this reality, because it is the way things are and the way things go.

When we understand what is happening, we get somewhere toward what we want.

About this blog

Essays in mental health philosophy—less “tips,” more why things work (or don’t). I look at the first principles under therapy, psychiatry, psychology, and everyday life, and occasionally share notes from papers and books-in-progress.

This space stands alongside—not inside—my counseling practice. If you’re seeking therapy in Colorado, there’s a link in the footer.
