Mathematical Realism – From Intuition to Esoterica

— Interesting manner of opening the empirical to… what?

Math, she says, and I guess others say.

My approach on this would be to ask a very simple question : if mathematics, RS sort of opening onto a truth of reality, then, why can’t I sleep at night?

I mean, literally. What is the relationship between the ultimate truth that mathematics affords us, and the thoughts that are spinning in my head that prevent me from sleeping sometimes?

I would submit that there is no math. That any sort of mathematical reality that would be able to explain the situation would ultimately be an assertion of a draconian type of belief that she argues in the beginning of her essay, which would be a Religion.

I’ve met many theoretical mathematicians, who point to some ultimate reality that they’re coming across and then start to speak of some grand consciousness that we have access through the intuition that mathematics affords us.

And I would say, yes, I think the beginning of the essay, the description of the situation is pretty accurate, but then I would say that mathematics is but one way into this truth .

That mathematics gives us only one Material Way, just like any other material way, any other real phenomenon that we investigate, into the truth of the matter. But further it is not one, not multiple, but simply is the truth of reality. To make an argument about it is merrily and ultimately to assert, in the end, a utopian Catholic religion in the broadest sense.

Good for the author for showing us another opening, one that typically points to only one solution: The unitive reality scientifically defined.

About this blog

Essays in mental health philosophy—less “tips,” more why things work (or don’t). I look at the first principles under therapy, psychiatry, psychology, and everyday life, and occasionally share notes from papers and books-in-progress.

This space stands alongside—not inside—my counseling practice. If you’re seeking therapy in Colorado, there’s a link in the footer.
