Duty and Shit

For those of you who don’t live in the United States, there is a word for shit, excrement, poop, which is not really used very often; This word is “doody”.

And as I was picking up my dogs shit this morning, I was reminded of a comedian from the 80s who had a bit about shit, and about little kids, how they would get really excited when they had to go poop, when they were learning to be potty trained and they successfully went to the toilet.

“I gotta doody!” Yells the three-year-old while waving his hands in the air excitedly with a big smile on his face.

And I was reminded of the homonym “duty”.

And then I just thought about how the reason why duty might mean something along the lines of “some thing I have to do” really aligns with taking a shit.

About this blog

Essays in mental health philosophy—less “tips,” more why things work (or don’t). I look at the first principles under therapy, psychiatry, psychology, and everyday life, and occasionally share notes from papers and books-in-progress.

This space stands alongside—not inside—my counseling practice. If you’re seeking therapy in Colorado, there’s a link in the footer.
